How to Optimize your HubPages to Make Money

86

By Marisa Wright

This Hub is for Bard of Ely, who needs to maximise his online earnings. The Bard has some excellent Hubs, but they haven't been money-making Hubs.

No, not that bard!
No, not that bard!

This Hub is all about how to maximize income on what I call "writerly" Hubs. It will help you if, like the Bard, you're here because you love writing, but you'd like to make money, too!

If you're starting from scratch, and your focus is more on making money than writing, my tips are relevant - but you'll get faster results if you study keyword research and SEO first.

It's important to remember that HubPages is a long-term strategy - what you write today will earn money in six months or a year, not right now (unless you're an expert at backlinking). Hubs need to mature to reach their full potential. If you need cash flow now, like the Bard, your priority is to learn how to become a freelance writer selling articles (like Sufidreamer) - or get a job!

However, that doesn't mean you should give up on your Hubs. It may take only a few hours of "tweaking" to improve their earnings potential. Then they can simmer profitably on the back-burner while you're doing other things. So let's do it:

Step #1 - Prioritize your Hubs

Work on the Hubs that get the most traffic first. Go to the Statistics page and order the Hubs by Page Views (click on the "30 days" heading twice). Now you can either export the table into Excel, or print the screen, so you have a handy list of your Hubs with the highest-trafficked Hubs at the top.

Step #2: Allow Space for HubPages Ads

Advertising on HubPages doesn't always appear in exactly the same place on every Hub. HubPages uses Yieldbuild to work out the best positions.

It makes sense, then, to make sure you leave space for ads. Split your text over several capsules, and don't fill the entire right-hand side of your Hub with photos, videos, Amazon or eBay ads - leave gaps for HP Ads or Adsense to appear.

It's especially important to take a hard look at your Amazon and eBay capsules. If you can't find products directly relevant to the subject of the Hub, delete them - because they'll divert the reader's attention away from Adsense or HP Ads, but you're unlikely to make any sales from them.

For instance, Bard has a Hub about the Black Madonnas of Tenerife. If it features books on the Black Madonna and Tenerife, he may make a sale. If it advertises books on the Canary Islands, it's less likely; books on European travel, no chance!

Tip: when you are logged in, you can't see all the ads above the fold, even in "Preview" mode. Log out and view your Hub, then you'll see how much advertising appears to outside visitors (and Google!).

Step #3 - Good Content "Above the Fold"

In January 2012, Google changed its algorithm to penalize sites with too much advertising "above the fold" (i.e. the bit of a web page visitors can see without scrolling).

The top right-hand corner of a Hub used to be regarded as the best place for an Adsense ad, and Hubbers were recommended to write a long first text capsule to allow space for one. However, there are already several advertising banners around the top section of a Hub - so to avoid attracting a Google penalty, it may be safer to keep your first capsule short, which will force the first ad down.

Step #4 - Keep Your Text Flowing

For most of your Hub, it's best to float your photos and videos to the right of the text (if you're not sure what I'm talking about, you need to learn how to use capsules before you go any further). A photo or video cutting across the page can often stop a reader scrolling down - so they'll never see the ads below it!

I know photos don't look as good smaller - but what are you here for, to make money or show off your photos? Remember if you have more than five, your readers can view a full-size slide show anyway.

If you have your own photos, bear in mind they're not protected from theft on HubPages. Consider putting them up for sale at a site like Dreamstime instead. You can always write a Hub or two to promote them!

Step #5: Keep Your External Links Low

I don't mean you mustn't link to other websites: Google likes to see outgoing links to authority sites. I mean keep them low down in the Hub.

The reason is simple - if a reader sees a link to another site before they get to an ad, they may follow that link and never come back to click on the ad!

So keep your links to other Hubs or other websites to the last couple of paragraphs. And don't go link-crazy: only link if the other Hub or site really adds value to your Hub. The more links you create, the more likely you are to have broken links in the future - and Google doesn't like broken links.

Step #6: Interlink, Interlink, Interlink

Make sure you interlink all your Hubs on the same subject. I don't just mean put them in groups - I mean mention your other Hubs in the text, (e.g. "...as I explained in my Hub on Belly Dance Workouts"). These are called contextual links and Google likes them especially. They're much more effective than using "click here" or "my Hub" - so make sure the link is a keyword.

Another alternative is to add an RSS feed or Links capsule listing your related Hubs. Make sure you only include Hubs on the same topic - start listing Hubs on other subjects, and you're liable to get unpublished!

You can also put links to all your related Hubs on your blog or website. However, first ask yourself, which one do you most want to get traffic - your blog or your Hubs? If it's your blog, then put links in your Hubs TO your website. If you want to make money from your Hubs and your blog is just for fun, then put links on your blog TO all your Hubs. Never, ever link in both directions because it reduces the value of the links.

As far as Bard is concerned, I think he would do better to drive traffic to his Tenerife blog by adding links on his Tenerife Hubs. However first he would have to monetize and improve his blog, so that's a project for another day!

You can see how I've implemented these ideas in my Hub on Tribal Belly Dance Costumes - I have links in the text to my website and to my related Hubs, and an RSS feed to my other Tribal Hubs at the end.

Step #7 - Four Quick Ways to Improve Traffic

Avoid Clever Titles

Most writers are taught to use a "catchy" title for an article, and witty headings within it. On the internet, that doesn't work - you must use titles that include your keywords, preferably in a phrase people actually search for. That often means they're somewhat boring, but don't worry - because titles are to attract Google. It's surprising what a difference it can make - I saw one Hub triple in traffic when I changed its title to include my keyword phrase!

The clip above explains how to use the Google Keyword Tool to optimize your title - but if the keyword tool is a mystery to you, don't worry. SEO is a major learning curve! In Bard's case it would take too much time to master, so in his case, I'd say - just ask yourself what people are likely to be looking for, and use those words and phrases.

For those with the time to study up on this subject, read Sunforged's Hub on On Page SEO Optimization.

The Summary

If the title is for Google, the summary is for your visitors. It provides the couple of lines you see under the Hub title on Google search results. Make sure it entices your reader to click on the link and read more! You'll find it at the top of the "reorder" box when you're in edit mode.

Write Long Hubs - or Interlinked Short Ones

Longer Hubs - between 800 and 1,500 words - do much better than short Hubs. To extend all your Hubs would take too long, but you can get almost as good a result by interlinking several short Hubs - but only if they're all on the same subject and only if they're each at least 400 words long. If they're less than 400 words, write some more, combine them together, or move them to a blog.

Remember, Google likes contextual links best Or you could include a right-floated, highlighted text or links box listing the other Hubs.

Keeping Readers on your Page

Google looks at a range of parameters when judging your Hub, and one of them is the length of time visitors stay. The longer they stay, the more value your Hub has in Google's eyes, the higher you'll rank on searches and the more visitors you'll get.

A simple way to hold readers longer is to add Youtube videos relevant to your subject. This has the bonus of giving you a free backlink - a link to your Hub will automatically appear on Youtube.

Happy Hubbing!

Excellent, Marisa - concise, clear and very useful. I am slowly working through some of my older Hubs, too, and these tips will come in handy.

We almost have the Bard up and running with a freelance site account - it is good to have a few more irons in the fire, as you said :)

Thanks! I have other tips too, but I'm conscious that spending too much time tweaking Hubs would take away from other money-making endeavours. To my mind, the ones I have included will make the most difference.

And I knew you'd set our Bard on the right track!

Bard of Ely profile image

Thank you so much, for this hub and the tips in it, Marisa! I am going to have to do a lot of work on the hubs I have I can see.

The news capsules I don't like because I have added them before and often find when I edit a hub that it says they are empty now so I have been deleting them. Any ideas on how to stop the capsules doing this?

My photos I am very proud of and am often complimented on. I always used to make a point of getting photos for my news stories that were published in hard copy papers and magazines. I have tried selling photos online before and have sold none so gave up on that idea.

My main frustration in my artistic career as a writer, singer, poet and photographer is I get an almost daily diet of people saying how good I am at these things but all of these talents fail badly to bring in much if any income. I realise that on that score I am one of billions of creative people worldwide with the same problem but that doesn't help.

I will bear all your advice in mind from now on and make a lot of changes.

Sufidreamer, thank you again too!

How timely! This is exactly the information I have been looking for. It should also help me to plan the layout of new hubs, and possibly my blog layouts.

Jerry G2 profile image

Jerry G2 2 years ago

I agree, great concise hub. As for the Bard's question, I've found in my experience that putting in a general one word keyword in the news feed works a lot better to keep it full than a more descriptive term. So that's been my strategy for using news feeds.

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright Hub Author 2 years ago

@Jerry - yes, you have to pick the right keyword, you can't just accept the title of your Hub (which is what appears by default). I often have to experiment to find one that works.

@Bard, something about the News capsules changed some time ago. I only discovered it when I went back through my Hubs to fix my Adsense placement after reading Lissie's blog post - all my News capsules were empty. But all I had to do was re-enter my keyword and bingo, they all reappeared.

Sad to say, good writing is not enough. In a magazine, the editor decides what articles will appeal to readers; the journalist writes them; and the graphic artist designs the layout. Online, you have to do all three, and the most important is being the editor - working out what will appeal to readers and sell your "magazine".

Marisa, I am starting to get the hang of this and have split up the text on a few of mine. I am having to think of some explanation for this. eg I just broke an interview up and for the second part called it "Continued".

Thank you for explaining about the news capsules. It appears that all mine are empty. I will start doing these again.

Other than a little SEO savvy and good, original content, the main focal point needs to be on "what's likely to be getting searched" on the web and so on. I mean, taking advantage of other peoples' inquisitiveness is a must-have property when it comes to marketing strategies. Even if you're a novice to the site with prior training elsewhere, you can't use expert SEO while being an elite writer...all while expressing a senseless subject and expect to make money. I think the message that needs to be emitted, is all about selecting what is often queried and better yet, go for secondary, less competitive terms when it comes to keywords and whatnot.

I've did all this in the past, and often times, people will give up before they make it. You got to be persistent or you better be very good at what you do; fact.

Nice hub...

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright Hub Author 2 years ago

@Obscurely Diverse, I agree that if your goal is money-making, you really need to write about topics people will search for. However, this Hub was focussed on maximising income from articles already written - because although they may not be perfectly targetted, there's no point in letting them go to waste.

Angel, the instructions for adding a tracking code are for people who have their own websites. On revenue-sharing sites like HubPages, you can't use them. Instead, you paste your Analytics ID into the Analytics section under "My Account", and your pages will be tracked automatically.

hi Marisa, I didn't know about altering the summary box in edit, I also have find out how to float a blue box with reference to my other hubs to link them together- once again great hub.

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright Hub Author 22 months ago

Brian, create the text capsule and move it (using the green arrows or the "reorder" box) close to where you want it. Once it's nested between other capsules, you'll see the right green arrow - click on that to float it right. Once it's in the correct place, then you'll find you can click on one of the blue boxes to change the background color.

The color won't show up until you save the capsule, and sometimes I find you have to do it a couple of times before it "sticks".

Do you know if the links hubs are do follow or not? Not sure which way to add anchor text to other hubs would be more beneficial for ranking.

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright Hub Author 21 months ago

Boomer, all links in your Hub are do follow, provided your content is original and your Hubber score is above 75.

Google likes contextual links (links in a paragraph) best, surrounded by relevant text (so don't put a link to a cooking Hub in a Hub about engineering, for instance). An RSS feed isn't regarded quite as highly.

If you're going to add a RSS feed to your Hubs, make sure it's to related Hubs only, to avoid diluting your keywords.

Marisa, thanks so much for all the useful information, I am trying to learn and improve, but the more I learn, the more I know there is to learn (if you know what I mean). Thanks for the tip about Revver, I did not know that you got a backlink for placing a video on your hub and also, thanks for the tips about outgoing links and updated content. I will try to apply what I have learned!

Greetings Marisa,

I am new to hubpages and just want to thank you for writing a very understanding and informative hub! Some of this is so confusing and you put it in layman terms. Easy to understand.

Thank you for sharing!

Blessings,

I feel very identified with Bard of Ely right now, I have beautiful photographs of very interesting places and I think I have managed to write good quality hubs about travel and places as well as gastronomy with valuable and nice to read information, but haven’t received a dime up till now. I am going to work on my hubs with your tips Marisa and see what happens. Thank you.

Marisa

This hub is a fantastic overview of how hubbers can rake in more money without being loaded with jargon of SEO, complicated backlinking and some such. It made for a good read and reminds us hubbers what our priorities should be, which by the way, haven't changed much principally since you wrote this hub nearly 2 years back. Awesome hub that has definitely stood the test of time!

I love the hub and you write with such authority. You may be just the mentor I am looking for. What do you say?

If you get the time it would be great if you could look over some of my hubs and let me know the verdict.

Hey Marisa, great hub! I have been doing mostly everything you talk about in this hub for some time now and I noticed the hubs that I created with this structure have the most traffic. I sure you have helped many hubbers with this information but most people won't take the time to do it. Voted up and useful!

Do you know how to add a banner across top of the hub?

nevergiveup 4 months ago

I mean the adsense banner across top of the hub. In some hubs it's appears on top while in some not.

Ah. That's not under your control. I notice that I can't see the top advertising banner when I'm logged in - have you tried looking at your Hubs when you're logged out?

Great tips. I hadn't thought about putting the links low to avoid a reader leaving the page early to chase the link. Great for new hubbers!
