How to Use Flickr Photos on Your Hubs
75This Hub is for DzyMsLizzy, a new Hubber with a passion for pussycats and a penchant for poetry. One of the challenges for poets on HubPages is that poems are usually short - which makes them much less likely to be found by search engines. Luckily, there is a solution. By combining a generous helping of photos and a closing sentence or two, it's possible to create quite a substantial Hub from a short poem.
There are several free stock photo sites out there, but I don't use them these days - because Flickr.com provides all the photos I could ever need.
Why Flickr?
There are some lovely pictures on stock photo sites - but not if you're looking for something outside the mainstream. Whereas on Flickr, you'll find lots of quirky personal shots, and plenty of photographs by professionals too, on almost any subject you can think of.
And Flickr photos are not only easy to use, it gives you a chance to interact with the photographers if you wish, and even get more publicity for your Hub or blog.
How to Find "Legal" Photos on Flickr
You can't use just any old picture on Flickr. Some photos are "All Rights Reserved" (which means you can't use them at all) and others have restrictions on their use. To find the photos you can use on HubPages or your blog/website, you need to do an Advanced Search. To get to the Advanced Search screen:
- Open the Flickr.com website.
- Leave the search box empty and click on "Search"
- On the next page you should see "Advanced Search" under the "Search" button. Again, leave the search box blank and click on "Advanced Search". That will take you to the Advanced Search page.
Or, you can cheat and follow this link: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/?
Now to do an Advanced Search:
- Enter a word or phrase to describe what you're looking for (in Ms Lizzy's case, probably "cats")
- Scroll all the way down and you'll see a section titled "Creative Commons". Tick "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content" AND "Find content to use commercially".
Why commercial? Because if you're writing to make money on a blog or Hub, it's classed as commercial - even if you're an amateur.
By the way, you "tick" by clicking!
Now click the "Search" button and voila, you should have a host of photographs to browse through. To look at a photo full-size, click on it. To go back to the gallery, use the "back" button in your browser.
How to Upload a Photo
First, you'll need to add some photo capsules to your Hub. Use one for each photo - it will make life easier if you ever want to edit your Hub.
Now back to Flickr. When you see a photo you like in the gallery, click on it and you'll go to the page where it's displayed full-size.
Here's where a lot of people make a mistake, and try to paste the URL of the page into the photo capsule. That won't work - you need to use the URL of the photo, which is different.
To upload the photo:
- Click on the photo to open the full-size version.
- Click on "view all sizes" in the top right hand corner
- Click on the size closest to your needs
- Right click and select "Copy Image Location"
- Open the HubPages photo capsule, select the "Import" tab and paste in the URL
- Add a caption
You're almost done, but there's one more step - and it's vital. As this photo is under a Creative Commons license, part of the deal is that you must let your readers know where you got the photo. You can do that by pasting the URL into the "Source" section of the photo, but there are other alternatives.
Tip
When you create the photo credit, link to the photographer's photostream (his/her main Flickr page), not the individual photo. That way, even if the photographer removes the photo from Flickr, you don't get a broken link.
Thanking the Photographer
There are a couple of ways you can include a photo credit. You could simply put it in the caption - but in my opinion, that's rude, because the caption can't be a link. People can see who the photographer is but are unlikely to visit their other photos.
Since you're using their photo, it's much more courteous to give them the benefit of a backlink. As a Hubber, you understand the value of backlinks, don't you?
You can give them a backlink anywhere you like:
- by pasting the URL in the "Source" field in the photo capsule itself
- In the text next to or near the photo
- at the end of your Hub
In the early days of HubPages, the "Source" link wasn't available, so all my early Hubs use the third version - which I've also used in this Hub.
There is one other way you can thank the photographer - but it's an extra, not a substitute for the acknowledgment on your Hub, which is compulsory. If you sign up for Flickr, you can leave a comment on the photo page, thanking the photographer for making the picture available and telling him/her that you've used it on your Hub. I've had some lovely conversations with photographers as a result, and been offered more photographs not published on Flickr.
Another Option - Flickrstorm
There is another way to search for items on Flickr. It's a separate website called Flickrstorm.
All you have to do is click "advanced", enter your search term, select "for commercial use" in the drop-down box and click "search".
The advantage of Flickrstorm is that you can see a large version of the photos you like without leaving the gallery. Plus it remembers the photos you've looked at. When you find one you want to use, click the "open on Flickr" link and follow the usual instructions to upload the photo.
The downside is that it returns only a limited number of photos. I used it a lot at one time, but found that I was missing some great photos by not looking at the full search results available on Flickr itself.
If you're not technically minded, all this may sound fiddly at first - but as you get used to it, you'll find it gets faster and easier. Anyway, it's worth it to enrich your Hubs with some fabulous photos!

Thanks Marisa, this is a really helpful Hub and one that I will be putting into action going forward.
I didnt even know that some Flickr photos could be used in that way and I am definitely going to check out Flickrstorm - thanks again
Very educational for a newcommer such as I. I do need all the help I can get. Thank You so much Marisa. I have this Hub bookmarked.
Good article.
Thanks for the great hub! I personally usually just google image search but change the setting to "commercial use" in the advanced search. That way I get lots of Flickr photos (google loves flickr!) and occasionally find a good non-Flickr one too.
Marisa, this is a great tutorial. I just made my way through my first use of a Flickr creative commons image, using your directions here. The only thing that didn't work for me was the right click to find the image URL. I used the download to computer option at the top of the page, and then uploaded to HubPages. Do I need to leave the picture name the same if I do it that way? Is there any advantage to re-naming a picture (mine or anyone else's) in order to incorporate keywords? Or should keywords be worked into the title and captions in the HubPages photo capsule?
Thanks!
I've always used Google images, filtered for commercial use, because it's obvious and easy. Unfortunately, I have to look at a lot of goofy, unrelated stuff to find anything good. I've used a bunch of Flickr stuff, not knowing anything about creative commons licenses. I'll have to investigate Flickr now. Who knows? Maybe I'll never look on Google Images again.
Very helpful information. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for useful and flag up information. Another tool in my writing chest.
I've seen bloggers who use Flickr photos and always wondered how to do it. Now I know! Thanks so much for sharing this useful information. A bookmarked hub, for sure!
I always forget about Flickr. Thanks for the reminder.
Wow! My goodness! Thank you! I certainly did not expect a 'dedication' of an entire hub! And I've been so busy working on my assorted edits that I didn't even make it here right away!
This is a lot of good information, and I thank you for this post!
I've done a lot of searching by using the search term, "xxxyyy subect public domain photos" just typed into the general internet search box, and, there are some good results, but usually very limited, and often, misleading, as you get shown pages to stock photo sites, which are for-purchase, and not public domain at all! That gets frustrating.
Thanks again for posting this gem!
I wish HubPages would make it so that I can put link in the caption portion of the photo capsule. I think that is the best place to put the photo credit. Just a shame it can not link.
Marisa I'm so glad you posted this. I see way too many hubs on HP with no evidence of photo credits. I post "Photo Credits" link capsules at the end of my hubs too.
Marisa thanks for this very informative Hub. I will be bookmarking it for future reference.
Thank you, Marisa.
Thanks alot Marisa, that was very helpful :)

I wasn't sure about Flickr - don't want to be illegal so I ignored them. This is a huge help. Thank you!
Marissa, your hubs are always so helpful. I am bookmarking this until I get the hang of exactly how to do it. And I write some poetry, so thanks for the insight.
Namaste.
Thank you for the useful tips! :)

I often use Flickr because we can get any photo. Thanks for the useful tips.
Thank you for writing this hub. I'm new and trying to find out the best ways to do things on HubPages. I was kind of scared of Flickr at first and got frustrated but I think that was because I didn't know how to use it properly. Now I do. A very, very, VERY useful hub, thank you again for writing. I've bookmarked it for future use.
Thank you. This is very helpful. I have been mostly using morguefile but I just checked out Flickr and am amazed at the quality selections. Do you get credit for referring someone over there?
Great hub Marisa I must say, I must give Flickrstorm a try, voted up and rated useful!
Marisa, I must be doing something wrong. The pictures I get are very Fuzzy. What should I do?
Many Thanks Marisa. Also I do not see the phrase "copy image to location". I know, I am just a computer dummy.
useful tips thanks so much
Thanks for the informative hub, good for beginners.
Thank you so much for this post! It worked like a charm! I am new and just learning. Until I read this I had been doing all my own photos, which sometimes didn't work out so well. I have bookmarked your instruction for future use. I had no idea how to get legal photos until you shared. Thanks for helping out us newbies!
Just put my first photograph on with a lot of help from this hub. Hopefully as i go on i will improve my knowledge more on this. Thanks. Michael.
I've just followed your directions and at first I was having trouble copying the URL from Flickr, but finally I got what you mean. Thank you.. I haven't even finished reading the your hub, it's just the beginning.
Thank you ... I've been looking for an article like this. Now I realize that I've been doing it wrong, and will have to change those tomorrow. Take care!
This has been a really helpful hub. Thank you so much for the great information. I have bookmarked this for future reference.
I had hoped to be able to add a photo stream or add a recent selection from my RSS on Flickr but that only adds the descriptions with a link (so far as I can see) so it looks as if I will have to do it the longhand way!
Thank you for the help. I'm a newbie & needed it!
Hi Marisa,
this is a really cool hub and useful!
I thought, someone told me at least, that is you sign up w/ flickyr you can make $, and I thought it was by posting people's photos. Perhaps it's by posting your own on flickyr? Is it true? Thanks!
Marisa, I'm so excited to read your informative Hub about Flickr. Thank you, thank you!

This is useful and explained well. I have always used my own photos on here, but now need to use other pictures sometimes and was finding it time consuming looking for suitable images. Thank you.

I've wondered how best to use Flikr. I like Wikipedia Commons, but it is limited. Wiki has a lot of photos in the public domain however.
Thanks for the tips, Marissa!
