Phil and Andrew demonstrate slides in Aris Allen shoes

You can wear street shoes for swing dancing if you want - but they won't let you spin and slide very well on most dance floors. Regular shoes have rubber soles to give traction, and that's exactly what you don't want when you get on the dance floor! Suede or leather soles can feel a little slippery when you first wear them, but you'll soon appreciate their slickness when you discover how much easier it is to turn.

One solution is to buy ballroom or chorus shoes from your local dance store. Dance sneakers have become very popular with swing dancers recently, too. But why pass up the opportunity to wear some fabulous vintage-style shoes to complete your outfit?

Ladies' Swing Dance Shoes

I love these Aris Allen swing dancing shoes! Why wear boring Mary Janes when you can have these velvet and mesh beauties?

These shoes are great for dancing because the heel is slightly lower than normal and designed for stability, yet it doesn't look frumpy like some other low-heel shoes.

It has a suede sole and a cushioned insole.

This is an exact copy of a real 1940's shoe - see an almost identical pair in the video below!

If you're a very athletic dancer, you may feel safer in a flat bowling shoe or a low-heeled lace-up wingtip for maximum balance.

Even though I know it's easier to dance in flat shoes, I prefer somethiing more feminine, with a heel. The wedge styles like the "rugcutter" are a good compromise. They give some height without losing stability, because the whole sole is in contact with the floor. And of course, they look so wonderfully authentic - every time I look at them, I think of 1940's movies!

Men's Swing Dancing Shoes

No swing dancer is complete without a pair of two-tone shoes!

This Aris Allen wingtip is made the traditional way, hand-crafted in quality leather using Balmoral construction. It has a thick rubber layer for extra shock absorption.

The Aris Allen Raw Sole is either sanded or varnished and after a few hours of wear they become "raw" on the bottom and perform a lot like Chrome Leather (suede) which allows you to spin and slide, and still control the floor.

Perfect for slip-slidin' the night away!
