Ballet Stretches

75

By Marisa Wright

Many ballet dancers will be familiar with the scene - dance students congregating on the studio floor before class, with their legs in froggy position or in a side split. Other dancers may be standing with one leg up on the barre. All are stretching conscientiously. You'll see the same thing backstage - dancers with their foot on a piece of scenery, stretching before they go on.

Would it surprise you to learn that they're all doing the wrong thing?

Cold Ballet Stretches Don't Work

Years ago, aerobics classes as well as dance classes would start with stretches, because it was believed stretching was important for warming up and preparing the muscles.

Now we know better. Stretching cold muscles won't warm them up or improve your flexibility one iota - cold muscles don't "give". In fact, forcing a cold muscle into a stretch only makes it to tense up - which is likely to cause it to strain, tear or even snap. And - here's the kicker -

If you sit in a stretch for more than 30 seconds, the muscles you've stretched won't be able to work at full capacity for the next 30 minutes!

So all those dancers who've spent their time before class sitting in side splits, are going to be less stable and less controlled for the entire first half of the class. And those dancers stretching in the wings are not going to perform at their best.

If you've ever felt unco-ordinated after stretching, now you know why.

"But why doesn't my teacher know this?", you ask. Well, many ballet teachers train only in ballet, and a fair proportion of them simply pass on what they learned from their teachers, rather than going to college. Which means new developments may pass them by.

But in the interests of safety, it's time to admit that just because something is traditional, doesn't make it right!

Of course, there are many ballet schools who do the right thing - but there are too many teachers still encouraging their young students to stretch before class, as in the video on the right.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't warm up. Just that long slow stretches aren't a warm up! Save your held stretches for the end of class, when your muscles are warm and will respond to sustained stretching.

Even at the end of class, never force your stretches. Launching straight into an extreme position will only cause the target muscles to tighten up and resist the stretch. Instead, start at a point where it still feels comfortable, then think about consciously relaxing the muscles as you push gently, deeper and deeper into the stretch. You'll find you get a lot further that way, and you'll be rewarded with much greater flexibility in the long run.

We used to warm up in ballet Marisa but the stetching was always done at the end of the class. Perhaps my ballet teacher was innovative? She always said pretty much what you have - muscles flex and stretch better when warmed. And even then, sometimes it was a pull on the ligments. You don't get bendy without a little discomfort.

These days I can just about cup the base of a foot and still holding it, extend it full flex. With just a little bit of a pull on the hips ;)

Sounds like your ballet teacher was ahead of her time! I'm still seeing dancers warming up by stretching - and people in aerobics classes, too.

Sounds like you're still doing pretty well - I let my flexibility slide without realizing it when I was dancing flamenco, and haven't done enough work to get it back!

I used to do ballet exercises when I was a poor, struggling student. They are great for balance, poise and help with self discipiline and are fun.

I'm glad I came across this so early in my flexibility quest, I feel sorry for any dancers who read this and wonder what if...

A long time ago, once a professional ballet dancer and trained in the Vaganova technique, our teacher would not allow us to stretch before class. We had to start with plies, only at the end of the barre did we begin stretch exercises. Stretch when the muscles are warm and pushing is not advised. Great article and good information.

Jashryn, it's interesting to hear from dancers whose teachers understood when to stretch many years ago. However, I was reminded only last week that the myth of stretching before class is still alive and well. I went to a belly dance workshop and the teacher had us warming up by - you guessed it - ballet stretches!

I just started ballet class last month and I am already pretty flexible, but I want to be better. I'm so glad I came across this cause just yesterday I was warming up for ballet class with splits and leg lifts. Now I know not to do that.

This is true you always have to warm up first before stretching. But I like to get to a class early and warm up then stretch before it starts it just makes me feel more prepared for the class. I love being flexible. My ballet teacher always tells us off if were stretching before warming up. :)

Clarice, if you're going to stretch before class (even if you're warmed up), you're not doing your muscles a favor. If you must do it, only hold each stretch for ten to twenty seconds.

I never knew that stretching for 3o seconds without warming up would decrease my flexibility. Now that I know this I will definitely warm up before stretching.

Great article!
